A mystery shopper is a person who evaluates business establishments and provides feedback to those businesses by filing out a survey based on their experience visiting those locations.
There are a lot of different industries that utilize mystery shopping – and just to demonstrate the breadth and depth, here are a few.
- retail stores – clothing, electronics, appliances, computers, jewelry, shoes
- restaurants – casual, fast food, and fine dining
- automotive – dealers and manufacturers, sales and service
- gas stations/convenience stores
- medical centers – doctors, hospitals
- manufacturers – telecom, appliances, computers, hardware and many other miscellaneous locations and services who are interested in the customers interaction with their staff.
Mystery shoppers also evaluate call centres and websites for sales, service, accuracy, ease of ordering, timeliness of arrival, and more.
Generally speaking, you don't need to. Some people do make a living shopping for many different companies, but as a rule we always tell people to expect to earn some pocket money but not to "quit their day job"! Mystery shopping is a fun way to earn some extra money, and since you are an independent contractor you can pick and choose jobs that you want to take. Most shoppers accept assignments that fit easily into their existing schedules, such as visiting a restaurant for lunch or adding their assignment to a visit they are already planning to make such as your grocery store. Different companies pay different amounts for the jobs that they offer, but as a range you should expect anywhere from 300 INR – 3000 or $ 5.00 -$ 40.00 USD INR per shop. For obvious reasons, the higher pay reflects a longer visit in-store and maybe a more complex survey. The lower pay is generally for a quick visit and would likely also include a purchase that is reimbursed, such as a sandwich and/or salon make over.
Well, if you decide you want to shop a restaurant we are not going to ask you to return the product , but in most cases you will either return the product to the store or you will not have to make a purchase. In fact, sometimes the return process is part of the shop. We know that there are many stories floating around that mystery shoppers get to keep televisions, telephones, stereo’s, cars, etc. but in reality that is rarely (if ever) the case. Items such as gas, convenience store purchases, small trinkets, groceries, and the aforementioned restaurant meal, tend to be the exceptions.
The mystery shopper (you) signs up with Trans MR Consulting as an independent contractor who might be interested in taking on occasional shops. You indicate where you are interested in shopping by entering the area codes that cover those geographies.
Based on the geography you choose, we will send out information via email to let you know when there is a pending assignment in which you might be interested. If you want more information on that assignment, you simply click on the link for more details. If you are not interested, you simply delete the email.
The preliminary details we provide to you will include the type of shop (in person, telephone, online); the type of establishment to visit (grocery, clothing store, car dealership); the dates that the shop must be conducted – start and finish; and the pay for that visit and survey. You will never have an obligation to apply for a shop! You are an independent contractor and may pick and choose the assignments that you want. If after reading the additional information, you are still interested, you will simply click to apply for that assignment.
At that point Trans MR Consulting reviews the interested shoppers and selects one to fulfill the assignment. Remember that if you submit for the assignment, you indicate that you are able to complete it within the provided parameters.
If you are awarded the assignment, you will be provided with a survey to be filled out, guidelines that you must follow in order to complete the shop, and also step by step instructions on filling out the surveys in the event that you have questions. All shoppers are also able to ask questions via email or telephone about any assignment.
Once you have conducted your shop, you will fill out your survey and submit the data online. We review the data and either approve the survey and submit the information to the client, or ask you further questions for clarification. When the survey is submitted, your payment is queued up – and you may expect a deposit in your Bank Account- For Mystery Shoppers in India and PayPal account- For International Shoppers within 4 weeks.
Shops that have been submitted, reviewed, edited, and approved will be paid. If we have questions about your report, it may cause a delay in payment. Remember that the shops have to be reviewed and approved by us before they will be paid.
If you were paid for only some of the shops you conducted, it usually means that the shops were not reviewed and approved yet. Please check with you project manager.
We pay mystery shoppers in India via NEFT directly to their Bank Account and Yes, if you are an International Shopper you will have to create a PayPal account to accept payment from Trans MR Consulting. PayPal is quick, easy, and free to you (assuming you only receive money and do not use your account for other reasons). Trans MR Consulting pays the fees associated with sending payment for your assignments and does NOT take the fees out of your pay. If you do not already have a PayPal account, please visit www.paypal.com for the system works.
Trans MR Consulting focuses primarily on servicing the market research industry – therefore we have projects that are ad hoc as well as recurring monthly programs. What is a Mystery Shopper?
A Mystery Shopper (secret shopper) is an important job – and it's part-time, paid, and flexible to your schedule. Many of your favourite stores, restaurants and theatres depend on our mystery shoppers to understand more about what is happening in their stores. The key is never to criticise but simply to provide a factual online report that will be of benefit to the business you are assessing.
